Exercise Technique - The Lunge

The Lunge

Lunges are one of the best exercises for lower body power, endurance and balance. Since it is an advanced exercise, body posture and technique is of great importance. There are 5 types of lunges - front lunge, back lunge, walk lunge, side lunge and jump lunge. Today's focus is on the front lunge.

Start by standing with your feet together. Lunge forward, ensuring your knee doesn't extend past your front toe and that your back knee is about 10cm off the ground with your back straight at all times (posture is very important). Pulling your shoulders back will make it easier to hold your posture.

Return to starting position in one movement ensuring you retain your balance. Repeat alternating legs.

Note:
Although lunges are good for physically fit people, it is important to consult your Doctor prior to attempting this type of exercise if you have knee or back problems.
